Description

Native to an extensive area from Africa to India and across southern Asia, this annual shrub is sometimes classed as a herb.

Use: The seed are a good poultry feed, with a crude protein content of about 30% of their dry weight. However, they also have a high gum content, which acts an antifeedant, and is removed through processing before being fed to poultry.

Climate: Grows naturally in sub-humid tropical lowland climates, generally in areas with average annual low temperatures of 17 to 24 °C, average annual high temperatures of 28 to 35 °C and annual rainfall of between 500 and 1200 mm.
